Thinking Hats



We are beginning an inquiry Unit called "Creating and Giving". Today we used 'Thinking Hats' to get us thinking about receiving a gift from someone.
Yellow Hat Thinking
What are the positive things about getting a present?
*You get something you want.
*Sharing your present.
*Getting to open your present.
*Having a surprise.
*Getting something new and different.
* Being excited.

Black Hat thinking
What are the negative things about getting a present?
*If you get something that you don't want or like.
*The person who gave it to you will feel sad.
*Getting a girl toy if you are a boy.
*Getting a present that is hard to open.
*Not sharing.


Red Hat thinking
How do we feel when we get a present?
*Excited because I wonder what it could be.
*Happy because it could be something I want.
*Sad because it might be something I don't want.
*Amazed because it might be something I always wanted.

Super Writers



In Room 11 we try our best to be "Super Writers".
To be a super writer you need to...
-Think about who you are writing for.
-Talk about what you will write about.
-Make a plan for your writing.
-Use letter sounds to write tricky words.
-Put spaces between your words.
- Use different sentence starters.
-Re-read your writing to make sure it makes sense.

Lamb and Calf day


Term 4


Welcome to Term 4!
It is already Week 3 and we have already been learning lots and having heaps of fun. There is lots on this term. We will be thinking and learning about lots of different things. Our topics and inquiry foci will include, Lamb and Calf day, Art (painting) and "Creating and Giving". Week 6 is E.O.T.C (camp) week. This is very exciting and will be a blast. Please keep the permission slips coming in. Thank you for all your help and support.

Keeping clean

We know that even if your hands look clean
they can still have germs.
We painted our hands with pretend germs so we could
practice washing our hands properly.

What happens when we eat?

We have been learning about "What happens when we eat". We know that this is called digestion. In Room 11 we wrote explanations about what happens when we eat. We are also learning to use Flip Videos. Watch this video of Madi and Jon explaining digestion.

Pebble Jar Reward

In Room 11 we filled the "Positive Pebble Jar!" For our reward we got to make healthy Fruit Smoothies. We made three different kinds, berry, banana and peach. YUM!

The Healthy Food Pyramid

We used books and the internet to find out where different foods should go on the Healthy Food Pyramid. We had to change a few things. Now we know what foods we can eat the most of and what foods to only eat sometimes. Have a listen to what some children have learnt about Healthy Food.

Interesting Visitor

Today Ryan's mum Vicki came to tell us all about bones.
Vicki takes photos of peoples bones. This is called an xray.
We learnt that ...
* Bones protect us. Our skull protects our brain and
our ribs protect our heart.
* Babies have 300 bones in their bodies and adults
have 206 bones.
*Cheese, yoghurt, milk, exercise and sun are all
very good for our bones.

Veins


Today we learnt that we have veins running all over our bodies! We now know that the heart pumps our blood through our veins and all over our bodies.

We had a go at making some veins with paint and straws. We blew through the straw so it would look like veins running all over the body.

Lucky us!


In Room 11 we are so lucky because Georgia's Mum made us an amazing human body to hang on our wall. It will help us learn about the different bones and muscles.

The Radula

We read a book and found out that a snails tongue is called the RADULA.
The radula has lots of little teeth on it. The snail uses its radula to eat leaves.

We asked an expert.


We have been learning about all the different ways we can find information. We have been reading books, using websites like youtube and Google. We were also very lucky to have an expert come and visit us. David Chapman told us lots of interesting things about snails.

We watched snails move. We found out that slime helps snails move on their foot. We could see the the snails foot moving along.

New Zealand Spiders


Room 11 have been finding out about spiders. We have been using the internet, books and making observations. Did you know that there are about 2500 different types of spiders in New Zealand!

What a Surprise!

Today we found out that lots of creatures we thought were insects actually aren't insects at all!
We learnt that insects have 3 body parts, 6 legs, 2 antennas and a skeleton on the out side of their bodies.
We now know that...
Spiders, worms, slugs, snails and centipedes are not insects.
I wonder what they are?

Our Caterpillars



In Room 11 we have been watching monarch caterpillars eat and eat and eat, until they turn into an amazing chrysalis with gold spots. When each chrysalis turned into a monarch butterfly we waited until the butterflies wings were dry and we let them go.
